Types of Formwork for Concrete Construction

Formwork can be understood as a mould used in the construction industry. Formwork construction is the process of casting material to obtain the desired structural shape and size. Formwork should be durable enough to carry the load during the casting operation. Its steadiness is significant also to endure the period of concrete getting hard and achieving some percentage of design strength. Formworks come in several types including traditional timber formwork, presently popular steel formwork and the re-usable plastic ones. The selection of the type of formwork depends on the kind of construction work.

The formwork can be temporary or permanent. Temporary formwork is a reusable formwork which is removed from around the concrete once set in place. On the other hand, permanent formwork is never removed. Concrete formwork is primarily the frame or mould that holds wet concrete in place while it sets appropriately.

Types of Formwork for Concrete Construction

Formwork needs to possess features like being durable, waterproof, leak-proof, stiff and lightweight to call it a good formwork. For concrete construction, formworks come in below materials.

Conventional Timber Formworks – These are generally used for small works which need lesser repetition. Timber formworks are less expensive compared to other materials and can be re-used usually 10-12 times. Their lightweight feature adds to the convenience.

Plywood Formwork - Plywood formworks are being used increasingly. This is because plywood presents a smooth surface which requires no further finishing treatment. Also, plywood formworks can be re-used normally 20-25 times.

Steel Formwork - This is a sturdy and economical option in the long run. Since steel formworks are re-usable to almost ten times more than the timber formwork, the initial high cost gradually levels off. Another good feature of steel formwork is that steel does not absorb water or concrete. This leaves with minimal chances of formation of the honey-combed surface. Steel formworks are also easy to dismantle.
